Whom we serve

You don't have to be a student
to book

The clinic sits inside SFU, but our patients come from all over North Burnaby and the surrounding area.

SFU students

Both SFU student plans work here, the SFSS plan for undergrads and the GSS plan for grad students. You've already paid for a cleaning in your student fees, so put it to use. Undergrads on the SFSS plan usually pay $0, because as a network clinic we cover the rest. We're in the MBC beside the Bookstore, so it's easy to fit a visit between classes.

Campus community

Faculty, staff and alumni, plus students from BCIT, Langara, Douglas, Capilano, UBC and elsewhere. We direct bill all student plans and most extended health plans.

North Burnaby and nearby

No campus connection required. If you live in North Burnaby, UniverCity, or nearby in Coquitlam and Port Moody and want a professional cleaning from a registered dental hygienist, you're welcome to book.

Why it’s worth it

A cleaning does more than freshen your breath

Brushing and flossing handle the day to day, but they can’t reach the hardened tartar that builds up below the gumline. Left alone, that build-up is what leads to bleeding gums, stubborn bad breath, and eventually the kind of decay that means a dentist and a much bigger bill.

A professional cleaning clears it out, smooths every tooth so plaque has less to cling to, and gives a trained hygienist the chance to catch a small problem while it’s still small. Most people walk out feeling like they’ve hit reset.

Removes tartar

The hardened build-up a toothbrush simply can't shift.

Fresher breath

The kind that actually lasts, not just until lunch.

Early warning

Cavities and gum disease spotted before they hurt.

A brighter smile

Surface stains lift off, no whitening required.

Hygienist or dentist?

Looking for a dental clinic
in North Burnaby for a
cleaning?

A lot of people search for a dentist or a dental clinic when what they actually need is a cleaning. Here’s the part most people don’t know: in British Columbia a registered dental hygienist can do your cleaning, scaling, polishing and exam directly, with no dentist referral. That’s the whole visit most people go to a dental office for.

So if you’re comparing dental clinics near SFU or across North Burnaby, a dedicated dental hygiene clinic like ours is often the faster, more affordable option for routine care. If you ever need a filling, crown or extraction, we’ll point you to a trusted dentist for that part.

What we offer at the SFU clinic

Everything you’d expect from a dental hygiene clinic, in one spot on campus. Most preventive care is covered by student and extended health plans.

Brighten your smile

Teeth whitening in North
Burnaby

Coffee, tea, red wine and time all dull a smile. Our professional whitening lifts those deeper stains in a single visit, with a registered hygienist watching your gums the whole way. It’s far stronger than a drugstore kit, and you can add it to a regular cleaning and walk out a few shades brighter the same day.

Using your coverage

Chances are, your plan already covers it

We bill most student and extended health plans directly, so in most cases you pay $0 at the desk. Once you book, we send a predetermination to your insurer to confirm what’s covered. If anything falls outside your plan, we tell you before your appointment, so there are never any surprises.

Healthy Smile is part of the Alumo Dental Network (formerly the Studentcare Dental Network) and is listed as a preferred provider for the SFSS plan. That’s what turns the SFSS plan’s 70% into full coverage for cleanings and recall exams.

  • Undergrads, SFSS plan: your dental maximum resets every year whether you use it or not, and most students don’t. Starting in January? You’re covered from January to August.
  • Grad students, GSS plan: SFU’s grad plan is separate from the SFSS undergrad plan, and we take both.
  • New students: you’re covered from day one, but insurers only allow direct billing after a 6 to 8 week window at the start of your program. Come in during that window and you pay up front, then claim it back for 100% reimbursement.
  • Other schools: we direct bill student plans from any other college or university, plus most extended health plans.
  • Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP): we’re registered with the federal plan at all of our locations, including SFU.

Good to know

Common questions

Do I have to be an SFU student to come here?

No. The clinic is on SFU’s Burnaby campus, but you don’t need any connection to SFU to book. Students from any school, staff, UniverCity residents and anyone living or working nearby are all welcome.

In most cases, yes, in full. SFU has two student plans, the SFSS plan for undergrads and the GSS plan for grad students, and we direct bill both. On the SFSS plan your insurer pays 70% for cleanings and recall exams, and because we’re part of the Alumo Dental Network (formerly Studentcare), we cover the other 30%, so undergrads usually pay $0. The plan year runs September 1 to August 31, with up to $700 a year for dental. Grad students on the GSS plan: we direct bill it too, and we’ll confirm your exact coverage before your visit.

Yes. We’re an Alumo Dental Network clinic and are listed as a preferred provider for the SFSS plan. The same network covers the Langara and Capilano student plans too.

Yes. We direct bill the SFU Graduate Student Society (GSS) plan as well as the SFSS undergrad plan. The two plans cover cleanings in similar ways but differ slightly in the details, so we’ll confirm exactly what yours covers, and what you’d pay if anything, before your appointment. Most grad students are still covered for the large majority of a routine cleaning.

No. In British Columbia a registered dental hygienist can do your cleaning, scaling, polishing and exam directly, with no dentist referral. For a routine cleaning you can come straight to us.

For preventive care, yes, and often faster and more affordable. We handle everything to do with cleanings and gum health. For treatment a dentist provides, such as fillings, crowns or extractions, we refer you to a trusted dentist. Think of us as the dental clinic you see for keeping your teeth healthy.

Inside SFU’s Burnaby campus, in the Maggie Benston Centre (MBC), Room 2200, right beside the main SFU Bookstore, at 8888 University Drive. We’re open by appointment on weekdays, 9 am to 5 pm.

Yes. We’re registered with the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan at all of our locations, including SFU.

If you don’t have a plan, we offer a straightforward no-plan package that bundles the assessment, scaling, polish and fluoride into one visit. Cleanings are billed by time, so we’ll confirm the exact cost with you before you book, with no surprises. Just ask us for current pricing.

Yes. There’s covered parking for students and staff at the Maggie Benston Centre, and visitors can use SFU’s pay parking on campus.

Most private dental plans cover a cleaning every six months. Most student plans cover one cleaning per school year (September 1 to August 31). Booking to match your coverage keeps you out of pocket.

That’s more common than you’d think, and it’s no problem at all. Just tell us when you book so we can set aside extra time. Cleanings are billed by time, so a longer catch-up appointment can cost a bit more, but we’ll walk you through it first. No lecture, we just get you back on track.
